Chronic abdominal pain is defined as pain lasting longer than 3 months and can arise from a wide range of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, urological, gynaecological, metabolic, and functional conditions. Causes are often multifactorial and may overlap.
Management is structured and stepwise, focusing on excluding serious pathology (malignancy, obstruction, infection, ischaemia, etc.) and targeting symptom control and functional improvement. I offer following interventions tailored to individual need and requirement that can be complimentary to other treatment modalities, aiming towards reducing pain and improvement in quality of life-
- Nerve blocks: Coeliac plexus, Splanchnic nerve block, Subcostal nerve blocks
- Trigger zone infiltration
- Radiofrequency denervation
- Neuromodulation (spinal cord or dorsal root ganglion stimulation) for refractory pain where all other treatment modalities have proven unsuccessful/limited.
You can request your GP to arrange a named consultant referral to the Barts neuromodulation service to access these advanced treatment options if they are not available in your area.
